Boston -59 -- Sat. Feb. 20

Out a bit before noon to do some tempo laps; really needed the lie-in this a.m., and have a ton of chores to do this p.m., so reluctantly not at the last Snowstorm 10K. Planned a short loop (2.62 miles), and used run there to warm up (2.56 miles). Probably needed to warm up a bit more--not feeling v. bright, somehow, though I do a set of stretches once there (at corner of Rural and Boardman). GPS digivice conked out, somehow -- wouldn't turn on, so it looks like I'll have to get a new one (ouf!); so, had phone with me as stopwatch.

Then off on first lap: Rural, GeoHannum, and Boardman, quite tough once I get into it as my achilles is sore, and the repeated hills don't help. Run FOUR laps non-stop, checking time as I cross the start line each time. Then, stop clock after lap 4, and recover a bit, before doing a cooldown run home. Sore, so stop clock a bit early, at bottom of development, for a total 2.31 miles. Here's the complete series:

Warm-up: 2.56 miles, 19:36, 7:39s
Lap 1: 2.62 miles, 17:09, 6:33s
Lap 2: 2.62 miles, 17:09, 6:33s
Lap 3: 2.62 miles, 17:39, 6:44s
Lap 4: 2.62 miles, 17:56, 6:51s
Cool-down: 2.31 miles, 18:57, 8:12s

Total mileage today = 15.35.
Laps = 10.48 miles, 1:09:53, 6:40s

Comment: This was hard both because of soreness, but also not having my digivice to give me mile times. I had a rough idea I was doing maybe sub-7:00s, but that was it. I felt myself tightening up and tiring on the third lap, after definitely pushing on lap two. Still, encouraged that I held a decent pace for just over 10 miles -- that's what I need to do next week. Conditions were pretty good, maybe even a bit too warm, with occasional strong wind gusts. Maybe a bit of a cold, too, right now; certainly very tired afterwards!
